I think the perceived relevance is the symptom but underlying that is the confidence. If you knew you were a great software engineer, would you be worried about staying relevant? Of course, there is the underlying thesis about whether software engineering will stay relevant (I strongly believe it will); if you don't believe that then the whole post is moot.
